34-year-old Tenzin Ösel is a 21st-century radical free thinker, dreamer, universal explorer, traveling soul, philosopher, musician, documentary filmmaker, humanitarian, father, friend, son, life-long-student of the cosmos, and former monk.

When he was just 14 months old he was formally recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of Lama Thubten Yeshe, the revered Tibetan yogi, scholar, and teacher.

Today, the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition, which Lama and his main disciple Lama Zopa Rinpoche founded in the early 1970s, comprises an international family and network of more than 160 centers, projects and services, now under the spiritual direction of Rinpoche.

Tenzin Ösel Hita Torres was born in 1985 in the village of Bubión at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, southeast of Granada, in southern Spain, to students of Lama Yeshe.

He was enthroned in March 1987 and at the age of seven moved to Sera Je Monastic University in South India where he lived and studied until he was 18.

When he turned 18 Ösel, made the decision to leave the monastic world to explore modern ways of life and thinking around the world.

He continued various formal studies, attending St. Michaels University School, a private high school in Victoria, British Columbia; and studying western philosophy, human rights, French language and art in Switzerland.

Always evolving, and trying to find new ways to connect with people, Ösel decided to explore filmmaking and received his Director of Cinema and Director of Photography degrees, as well as a Masters in Documentary Films from Instituto del Cine Madrid.

He initially apprenticed under Matteo Passigato, an Emmy Award nominated camera operator and cinematographer based in Bologna, Italy, who directed with Ösel his first film, Being Your True Nature. Released in 2012 and filmed during the 2011 FPMT Universal Wisdom Education Gathering at the FPMT center in the south of France, Institut Vajra Yogini, this documentary introduces a new form of education pioneered by Lama Yeshe, Universal Wisdom Education, helping modern people access ancient tools to help lead happier, more meaningful lives.
